Kimi Antonelli heads into this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix with a significant advantage at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, but the Mercedes driver is determined not to get distracted by the title race.

Antonelli arrives in Baku after winning the Spanish Grand Prix, his eighth victory of the 2026 season. That result extended his championship lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 81 points after 14 rounds. With nine rounds still remaining, Antonelli knows there is plenty of racing left and is focusing on maintaining his recent level of performance.

The 20-year-old Italian has been one of the standout drivers of the 2026 campaign. His consistency, combined with Mercedes’ strong qualifying and race pace, has allowed him to remain at the top of the standings since the Japanese Grand Prix earlier in the season.

However, Antonelli has repeatedly stressed that the championship is not yet decided. Speaking ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he said he is taking the season “one race at a time” and wants to continue delivering strong results rather than becoming too focused on the points situation.

Baku presents a very different challenge from the circuit in Madrid. The Baku City Circuit combines long, high-speed sections with tight corners around the historic part of the city. The narrow layout leaves little room for mistakes, while the track’s unpredictable nature has produced dramatic races in the past.

Antonelli also has a recent memory of performing strongly in Baku. At last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he finished fourth after qualifying fourth on the grid. He narrowly missed out on a podium behind Max Verstappen, George Russell and Carlos Sainz.

The 2025 race also provides a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in Baku. Oscar Piastri entered that weekend as the championship leader but endured a difficult event. After crashing during qualifying, the McLaren driver started ninth. He then jumped the start before dropping to the back and crashing into the barriers at Turn 5 on the opening lap. The incident ended his race and reduced his championship advantage over teammate Lando Norris.

That history makes concentration particularly important for Antonelli this weekend. The Mercedes driver has acknowledged that there is very little margin for error around the Baku circuit and that the team will need to build its performance throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, Russell remains mathematically in the title fight. He is 81 points behind Antonelli and has said he intends to continue fighting until the championship is no longer mathematically possible.

With Mercedes leading the Constructors’ Championship and Antonelli carrying strong momentum into the race, attention will be on whether he can continue converting that advantage into points.

For Antonelli, however, the message remains simple: stay focused, avoid mistakes and keep performing at the same level. Baku will provide another test of whether the young Mercedes driver can maintain his impressive run as the 2026 championship enters its final stages.
